REAL WEDDING: DAVID + PATRICIA {Match Made In Nola}

Patricia was a junior at Tulane when she met David, a first-year Tulane medical student. He was performing a traditional Filipino dance at one of the New Year’s celebrations on campus when she felt a gut instinct to introduce herself to him. With a tap on his shoulder, the rest was history.

Knowing Patricia’s respect for traditions, David planned his proposal accordingly. After asking Patricia’s father for her hand in marriage, David created the perfect moment in front of St. Louis Cathedral. He tapped her on her shoulder just like she did years ago to him and dropped to one knee. Even though Patricia was stunned, she knew she didn’t have any other answer but yes!

“My brain malfunctioned when I saw him get down on one knee,” Patricia says. “I’m sure he said a beautiful speech, but my brain refused to process at that time!”

David and Patricia created a wedding that was an embodiment of them and their love for each other.

“We wanted to show what was really important to us: our Filipino heritage, our love of New Orleans and my husband’s Navy traditions,” Patricia says.

The couple wove in Filipino wedding traditions with the presentation of 12 coins for luck, a veil for the bride and a cord placed around the couple for unity during their ceremony. They highlighted their love of New Orleans through their gold and white fleur de lis motif, secondline and signature drink called a “A Little Lagniappe.” David had his Navy friends perform a military salute to honor his ties to the Navy. They even choreographed a hip-hop dance together to narrate their love of dancing.

David and Patricia were a match made in New Orleans, and while their wedding was about their love for each other, Patricia’s favorite part was being able to share special day with the one’s she loved.

“Some people think a wedding is all about the bride and groom,” Patricia says. “Looking back, our wedding day wasn’t just about us. It [was] a celebration of everyone who has supported and loved us throughout the years. My favorite thing was just seeing how happy everyone was.”
