MARRIAGE LICENSE New Orleans Information
When should I apply for a Louisiana marriage license?

Since a Louisiana marriage license is valid for only thirty days from its purchase date, applicants should apply one to two weeks before the scheduled date of their marriage.

The following are specific requirements to obtain your marriage license.

  • Call the local Marriage License Bureau and determine what you need to do and have. Ask these questions: 1). Is the license valid statewide or just in this parish? 2). What's the waiting period before we can marry? 3). Do we need to take blood tests? 4). Do we need health certificates?
  • Both of you must go to the Parish Clerk's office to obtain the license.
  • Take proper ID with you. If under 18, your parents must go with you, with proper ID, and sign their consent.
  • If divorced, there's a 30-day waiting period and you must provide the divorce decree.
  • Your license is only valid for 30 days.
  • Once the license is issued, any authorized person may perform the wedding ceremony.
After the wedding, now that you're "Mr. and Mrs." the two of you need to change your address on all applicable records that will now pertain to you as a couple. And their are some definite changes that you need to take care of: 1). Name on driver's license 2). Name on Social Security card 3). Name on credit cards 4). Name on personal accounts 5). Name on bank accounts Once the two of you have committed to joint legal and financial responsibilities, you will be prepared for a life-long relationship. Now you can relax and enjoy the rest of your life together, with no individual obligations to cause conflict. Listed below are courthouses for New Orleans and the surrounding areas, but you can obtain your license at any courthouse throughout the state.
