Get Me To The Church On Time
By Jenny Fiore

How frequently will you wear a white ball gown and sparkling jewels, have your hair and makeup professionally done, and commit to a lifelong partnership under the watchful eyes of friends and family? Unless you’re Liz Taylor, the rarity of this experience will be a close second behind that of Ed McMahon at your doorstep with a hippo-sized check and camera crew. So, on this day, why roll up in your brother’s 1994 Ford Taurus with the Vote Perot sticker on its bumper? Why not be chauffeured by a professional and arrive in style? In the Crescent City, there’s a multitude of ways to do that.

Some couples ride in a limo and a carriage. They use one to get to the wedding and the other one for the reception. Most transportation services in town operate as friendly competitors, especially because the many local limo companies are hard pressed to accommodate the thousands of weddings and special events that take place in New Orleans each year.

Advance Reservation.

Six months advance reservation generally works, but you may need to reserve further out, depending on your wedding date. There is usually a surcharge for a chauffeured-vehicle rental on holiday weekends, as many chauffeurs are on vacation. August is typically light for limo services, so it can be easier to get a car with less notice for that month. On the other hand, weddings during March through May are competing with proms for vehicles. October, June, April, and December are the busiest months in terms of wedding reservations.

Wedding Specialists.

Not all transportation companies specialize in weddings. Those that do generally attend the local wedding shows. They mind the details like putting a "Just Married" sign on the vehicle, tidying up the interior between stops to make it fresh and photographable, and literally rolling out a red carpet for you at your destination. So, you may start your search for a transportation company at local wedding shows.

Capacity.

Stretch limousines can normally handle ten to twelve people, but that’s a tight squeeze. In a vintage vehicle or carriage, it’s best to stick with only two passengers. Ask your transportation company or wedding planner for advice on who should travel together in which vehicles. There’s no right or wrong way, just a lot of options.

Tipping.

A typical tip is 15 to 20 percent, but remember you should only tip if you’re pleased with the service. If drivers do a good job and are on time, and the vehicle is kept beautiful, then they should be rewarded. Some companies include an upfront charge for a tip in their contract, but be advised that many of these companies do not pass along that "tip" to the driver.

Deposit.

Many companies require a deposit. Some only ask for a credit card to guarantee your reservation. Be aware that if someone other than a passenger will be paying, the company usually needs special paperwork from that person ahead of time (for liability reasons).

Remember that you’re not simply contracting for a ride. You’re contracting for an experience. Whether you opt for car or carriage, your vendor should be able to tell you what extra value they can give you for a wedding. After all, this is no trip to the airport they’re providing. It’s your wedding day, and a good transportation company will know to give you the royal treatment, and how.
